How to Check If Your Tyres Are Unsafe
Your tyres are the only part of your vehicle that makes direct contact with the road. If they are worn, damaged, or unsafe, your stopping distance increases and your grip reduces significantly. This raises the risk of accidents. Knowing how to properly check your tyres can help you avoid breakdowns and stay safe.
At Roadside Tyres 24hr Ltd, we provide professional mobile tyre services in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester, Coleford, and Tewkesbury. Here’s how to check whether your tyres are unsafe.
1. Check Your Tread Depth
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Driving below this limit is both illegal and dangerous.
You can perform the simple 20p test:
- Insert a 20p coin into the main tread groove.
- If you can see the outer rim of the coin, your tread may be below the legal limit.
Low tread depth reduces grip, especially in wet weather, and increases the risk of aquaplaning.
If you are unsure, our mobile tyre technicians can safely inspect your tread at your location.
2. Look for Cracks, Bulges, or Cuts
Visible damage is a strong indicator that your tyre may be unsafe. Check for:
- Bulges or blisters on the sidewall
- Deep cuts in the rubber
- Cracking or perishing
- Embedded objects such as nails or glass
A bulge usually indicates internal structural damage and could lead to a sudden blowout. If you notice this, do not continue driving.
Our 24hr Emergency Service is available if your tyre becomes unsafe unexpectedly.
3. Check for Uneven Tyre Wear
Uneven tyre wear can indicate alignment, suspension, or pressure issues. Common signs include:
- One edge worn more than the other
- Excessive wear in the centre of the tyre
- Feathered or patchy tread wear
Ignoring uneven wear reduces tyre lifespan and affects vehicle handling. We can assess and replace tyres on-site and advise if further mechanical checks are needed.
4. Monitor Tyre Pressure Regularly
Correct tyre pressure is essential for safety, fuel efficiency, and tyre longevity.
- Under-inflated tyres can overheat and wear prematurely.
- Over-inflated tyres can reduce traction and cause uneven wear.
Recommended pressure levels are usually found in your vehicle handbook or inside the fuel cap.
If pressure keeps dropping, you may have a slow puncture. Our mobile tyre support team can inspect, repair, or replace the tyre quickly.
5. Notice Vibration or Unusual Noise
Vibration while driving can signal:
- Tyre damage
- Wheel imbalance
- Internal structural failure
Excessive road noise may also indicate worn tread. If your vehicle feels unstable or noisy, have your tyres checked as soon as possible.
Our fully equipped vans can balance and fit tyres on-site across Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester, Coleford, and Tewkesbury.
6. Consider the Age of Your Tyres
Even with good tread, tyres deteriorate over time. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tyres after 5–6 years, regardless of appearance.
You can find the manufacturing date stamped on the tyre sidewall. If you’re unsure how to read it, we are happy to assist.
Do Not Ignore Warning Signs
Driving on unsafe tyres can result in accidents, fines, and penalty points. If you’ve noticed any of the above issues, act quickly.
